Common Home Remedies for Ailments

Common home remedies have been used for centuries to cure a wide variety of ailments.  While many people moved away from home remedies in favor of medication over the last two centuries, natural cures are returning to favor.  This is in large part due to the dangers and side effects associated with prescription medication.  Such side effects may run the gamut from the inconvenient, like frequent urination, to the fatal.  Further, home remedies have proven to be more effective than their medical counterparts for many types of ailments.

Here are some of the most popular natural, common home remedies used today.

Jasmine_Strength24_Common Home RemediesGarlic – Garlic works well for a large variety of conditions.  Taken regularly, it improves the immune system’s ability to fight off bacterial and virus infections.  While many enjoy garlic on a regular basis without suffering from illness, those who learn that they have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or heart disease often start consuming more of it as a blood thinner.  Whether you choose to include it in your regular meals or prefer to take garlic supplements, garlic should be a staple in your home.

Castor Oil – Many cultures have used castor oil for years.  Its uses include relieving severe itching, preventing bruising, and helping cleanse the body when gastrointestinal problems, such as constipation, arise.  This common home remedy has a bad reputation due to its foul taste, but you can try mixing it with a glass of juice or tea for similar results with a better taste.

Cherries or Cherry Juice – Because of cherries’ ability to relieve swelling, mixing two tablespoons of cherry juice with six ounces of water can help relieve pain associated with arthritis and gout.

Licorice – Licorice is a candy that is especially popular with children, making this one of the most popular of the common home remedies.  For relief of coughing and congestion, try making a cup of tea with some licorice root.  Brew the licorice root in your favorite tea and heat it for 10-15 minutes.  While the tea is brewing, inhale the steam to help break up mucus and clear your airways.  After it has brewed, allow it to cool to a lukewarm temperature.  Then consume 2-3 cups of the tea until your cough and congestion subside.  Those who us this remedy should feel the results quickly.

Onions and olive oil – A long-time favorite of the common home remedies, olive oil and onions can start clearing congestion symptoms immediately.  Put some olive oil in a pan and begin heating it.  After a few minutes, add chopped or pealed onions.  After frying the onions, add ¼ teaspoon of curry powder.  Once the mixture has set, have it as a tasty medicinal snack.  For best results, do this 3-4 times a day.  This will rapidly clear up chest congestion.

Although medicinal cures certainly have their place, common home remedies should be used whenever possible to avoid the dangers and side effects that come with almost any type of medicine.  A healthy diet is the best way to avoid illness, and incorporating some or all of the items above is a great way to avoid becoming ill in the first place.  When illnesses arise in spite of that diet, targeted nutritional solutions often offer the best option for improving most common symptoms and diseases.
