Healing Benefits of Qigong

Qigong (pronounced chee gung) is the practice of aligning breath, awareness and movements as a form of exercise as well as for martial arts training, healing, and meditation. There are numerous healing benefits of Qigong that have a long history. This traditional Chinese medicine practice extends back more than 4,000 years. Qigong has historically been used as a way to cultivate and balance “qi” (or “chi”) which is the “intrinsic life energy” within each of us. “Gong” refers to the skill cultivated through a regular and disciplined practice.

Most of the ideas in traditional Chinese medicine rely on the premise that our bodies are filled with the force of life which powers our organs and maintains our well-being. Our lives depend on the flow and stability of our qi. If this qi is somehow afflicted, our health becomes afflicted. The balance and flow of qi is therefore paramount to our lives and the immediate concern of Chinese medicine. If we are ever ill, it is the job of traditional Chinese medical practitioners to restore the flow of qi in order to bring us back to health.

Strength 24_Benefits of Qigong — The Breath of LifeThe healing benefits of qigong are achieved by practicing on a regular basis. In doing so, we can support our own health through the maintenance of our qi. In most instances, a qigong practice involves calm, rhythmic breathing together with slow repetition of beautiful, fluid movements, a calm state of mind, and visualizing the qi being guided through the body. To the onlooker, it appears to be a flowing and graceful dance.

Breath of Life

When we consider the fact that we are constantly breathing, and we realize the importance of air to our vital systems, how can it be denied that the way we breathe will affect our health? Just as the way we eat has the ability to drastically change our lives, the techniques used in breathing can alter our health.

By aligning the mind and body, the art of qigong enables the user to heal their body in a way similar to the techniques used by the skillful Buddhist monks. There is a substantial amount of concern that the majority of people have not reached their potential. This includes everything from the unlocked parts of our brains to the way we breathe. By giving careful consideration to the way we breathe – an essential part of life, no doubt – we can help to keep our bodies healthy and our minds clear.

Naturally, the use of careful breathing has also been adopted by martial artists who need to be in top physical condition in order to perform well. By using their breath well, martial artists and even modern day weight-lifters can add to their strength and long-term vitality.

In contrast, consider the effect that rapid breathing has on your body. It becomes quite uncomfortable very quickly and may even induce stress or anxiety. When someone needs to calm down, taking a single, focused, deep breath can instantly change his or her mood. It isn’t absurd to think that consistently breathing in such a controlled and beneficial way would have positive effects on our bodies.
